The dredge pump is designed to draw sediment, debris and other hazardous materials from the surface layer into the suction pipe and transport the material through the pipe to the discharge site. A clear clean fluid supplied from an external source is normally used which is delivered to the main sealing surface on the fluid side of the sealing process. By using a closed gap throat bushing, the stuffing box can be back-pressurised to a higher pressure, ensuring that the flushing fluid does not flash across the seal face.

Settling slurries are formed by coarse particles, which tend to form unstable mixtures. Special attention should be paid to flow and power calculations when selecting a pump. Most slurry applications consist of coarse particles and therefore have a higher abrasion resistance.
