First, what is a slurry? A slurry is a semi-liquid mixture, usually consisting of fine particles. Examples of slurries can include manure, cement, starch, or coal suspended in water. There are countless other combinations that can be considered slurries. Because of the added particles and thicker consistency, special pump requirements should be considered. A standard pump may be able to handle the fluid, but not as effectively as a properly sized slurry pump.

Determine the operating parameters of the pump.

When dealing with slurry, you generally want to go bigger and slower. The thicker the impeller, the better it will hold up. The slower the pump, the less erosion will inflict on the impeller. Total life cycle cost considerations are critical when specifying pumps for severe operating conditions, such as FGD service. High chrome pumps are ideal due to the corrosive pH of the slurry.

Even if the product is labelled as containing E171, no information is usually given about the quantity, particle size and particle structure. FDA claims that TiO₂ may be safely used as a colour additive for colouring foods in quantities up to 1 % by weight of the food. Interestingly, TiO₂ is frequently declared as a “natural colouring agent” and is therefore well accepted by consumers.
