Metal and/or rubber pump bushings are used to combat the erosion of solid particles found in the slurry. Metal slurry pump housings are usually made of carbide to resist erosion caused by increased pressure and circulation. Sometimes wear-resistant steel is used on the pump casing so that the pump can be welded if repairs are needed.

The FGD process begins when the limestone feed (rock) is reduced in size by crushing it in a ball mill and then mixed with water in a slurry supply tank. The slurry (approx. 90% water) is then pumped into the absorption tank. Pultruded fiberglass grating is made using premium grade isophthalic polyester, vinyl ester or phenolic resin systems with a synthetic surfacing veil, making it corrosion resistant, lightweight, and durable. Pultruded fiberglass has a grit surface for safety, and a greater strength to weight ration than molded fiberglass grating.
