Traditionally, centrifugal pumps are used to pump highly abrasive slurries. Centrifugal pumps use the force generated by the rotating impeller to impinge kinetic energy into the slurry.

WY type pump casing is made of abrasion resistant metal, impeller material can be abrasion resistant metal or rubber. The submerged parts of WYJ are all lined with rubber, for transfer corrosive slurry.

In a subsea installation, the slurry pump runs directly in the slurry and does not require a support structure, which means it is flexible and easy to install. If possible, the catch basin should be equipped with sloping walls to allow sediment to slide down into the area directly below the pump inlet. Agitators should be used when the liquid contains large amounts of solids and has a high particle density. Freestanding or side-mounted (submersible) mixers are an excellent choice for resuspended solids, especially if the catch basin is large or does not have sloping walls.

If you have experience pumping slurries, you know it's not an easy task. Slurries are heavy and difficult to pump. They cause excessive wear on pumps and their components and are known to clog suction and discharge lines if not moving fast enough. Most importantly, it’s a challenge to make slurry pumps last for a reasonable amount of time. But, there are a few things you can do to extend the life of your slurry pump and make pumping slurry less of a challenge.

Slurry pumps with rubber lining are the ideal pump for the mineral sand industry. They have a special rubber lining that makes them heavy duty pumps capable of withstanding high levels of abrasion.

From an operational point of view the stuffing box is different as it requires some leakage to ensure lubrication and to prevent heat build up. The mechanical seal box should be leak free.
